The drip coffee brewers that call our countertops home are an essential part of our family gathering spaces. You know them well and have probably bought more than your share over the years. While the common drip brewers can do the job, technology has given us the ability to make excellent brewed coffee at home with minimal investment—here’s a great list of drip brewers that do a great job. Regardless of which brewer you use, follow these 5 easy steps to learn how to make drip coffee and you’ll end up with a rich, full-bodied cup every morning.

You Brew You
- You can apply the following tips to your drip brewer, we highly recommend a digital scale!
Step 1: Weigh Coffee
- For a full batch of coffee, weigh 75 grams of whole beans.
Please note: Our instructions are specific to a Bonavita 8-cup brewer, but our brew ratios can be applied to any high-quality drip coffee machine.
Step 2: Weigh Water
- Weigh out 1200 grams of water, you can also measure 1200 milliliters of water in a measuring cup because the Metric System is marvelous!
- In our brew video, Jackson follows our 1 part coffee to 16 parts water ratio and uses 60 grams of coffee and 1000 grams of water. Make the brew that’s right for you!
Pro tip: Do not use distilled or spring water as they are so pure that your coffee will taste flat.
Step 3: Grind Coffee
- Grind coffee on the #15 setting in the Baratza Encore grinder.
- If you’re using another grinder, try to aim for a grind that is similar to coarse Kosher salt.
Step 4: Prepare Ground Coffee
- Add ground coffee to the filter basket and shake so that the bed of grounds is level.
- Place the filter basket in the brewer and press go to get the party started.
Step 5: Pour and Enjoy!
- Enjoy your mug(s) of scientific magic and marvel at life’s mysteries.
- We prefer to drink our drip coffees with a generous side of local donuts and the morning newspaper.
